Important Tourist Locations in and around

  • Karunagappally - This town has an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Siva, two old mosques and a Mar Thomas Church, thus setting a perfect example of communal harmony.. Padanayarkulangara is a mini civil station at Karunagappally and it was once the military station at Kayamkulam Rajas. The ancient idol of Buddha that was recovered from a local tank was preserved in the Krishnapuram palace. This place is linked with Kollam by rail and road.
  • Sasthamkotta - Sasthamkotta is an attractive beauty spot, a health resort and a centre of pilgrimage on the right bank of the Kallada river. Sasthamkotta Lake is a beautiful fresh water lake is considered to be the largest in Kerala and an ideal picnic spot which is surrounded by hills on three sides. The ancient Sastha temple dedicated to Lord Sastha is an important pilgrim center situated amidst dense forest. The two main festivals of this temple are Mandala Pooja (December-January). Buses are frequently operated to Sasthamkotta.
  • Ochira temple - The unique feature of this famous pilgrim centre is that there is no deity or idol worshipped over here. Instead this temple is dedicated to omnipresent divinity or universal consciousness, known as Parabrahma. The two main annual festivals celebrated here include Ochira Kali in mid June and the twelve day Panthrandu Vilakku in November/December. Ochira is an important handicraft center where fancy articles of screw pine mats are manufactured. There are frequent buses services from Kollam and Alleppey.
  • Matha Amrithanandamayi Ashram, Vallikavu - The famous Amritapuri, the main residence and head quarters of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi is located in Vallickavu, Karunagappally which is an international pilgrimage destination. The ashram is accessible both by road and boat.
  • Picnic Village - Asramam picnic village is located along the backwater front, in the 200 year old Guest House Complex which is the main centre of various recreational and tourism development activities in Kollam. An Adventure Park, the Tourist Boat Club, the Children's Park and the Yatrinivas are situated in this vast tourist complex.
  • Thazhava - This is an important center of screw pine mat industry. An Image of Buddha which was discovered from a tank known as Pallikkulam near Maruthoorkulangra is one of the interesting archaeological relics, associated with Kollam district.
  • Chavara - Thousands of tonnes of mineral sand are exported from Chavara to various countries and it is situated on the Kollam - Alleppey road. The Kovilthottam port is situated here. Four other major industrial establishments like Indian Rare Earths, The Kerala Premo Pipe factory, Kerala Mineral and Metal factory and Titanium Complex are also sited in Chavara.
  • Neendakara - Neendakara is the Headquarters of the Indo-Norwegian Fisheries Community project, which was established in 1953.The important institutions under this project include the boat building yard at Sakthikulangara the Fisherman's Training Institute, the ice factory and the refrigeration Plant. Neendakara Port, the hub of fishing activities is here.
  • Alumkadavu - This place is located on the lakeside of Kollam-Alappuzha National Water Way and the famous kettuvalloms, or houseboats, are crafted here. Alumkadavu is a popular boat-building and repairing centre and an ideal location to watch coir being made.
